War service: Egypt, Western Front. Embarked Sydney, 10 May 1917; disembarked Devonport, England, 20 July 1917, and marched into No 3 Camp Details, Parkhouse. Transferred to Engineers Details, Brightlingsea, 2 August 1917. Proceeded overseas to France, 31 October 1917; taken on strength, 5th Field Company Engineers, in the field, Belgium, 6 November 1917. On leave to Paris, 1 March 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 12 March 1918. Admitted to 5th Australian Field Ambulance, 18 May 1918 (flat foot, right), and transferred same day to 47th Casualty Clearing Station; to Ambulance Train No 3, 19 May 1918, and admitted to 10th General Hospital, Rouen, 20 May 1918; to England, 23 May 1918, and admitted to Canadian General Hospital, Taplow, Buckinghamshire, 24 May 1918 (deformed toe, right foot); to Addington Park West Hospital, Croydon, 8 July 1918. Discharged on furlough, 23 August 1918, to report to No 3 Command Depot, Hurdcott, 6 September 1918. Granted leave with pay and subsistence (Non-Military Employment), 8 February-8 August 1919: training as motor mechanic, British School of Motoring. Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Nestor', 1 November 1919; disembarked Melbourne, 15 December 1919; discharged, Sydney, 27 February 1920.
