'On the night of 4th October, 1917, Privatew RAY went out under an exceptionally heavy shell fire and on two separate occasions remained out in the open dressing wounded, near WESTHOEK. About 3 p.m. on the afternoon of 5th October, 1917, when heavy destructive fire was being directed onto the light railway line, many casualties occurred, and work had to be temporarily suspended. RAY made three trips into the zone of heaviest fire, coolly dressing wounds without shelter and assisting in the carriage of patients into safety.'
