Embarked from Alexandria to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, Gallipoli, 30 August 1015. Disembarked at Alexandria from Mudros (general Gallipoli evacuation), 27 December 1915.

Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force; disembarked Marseilles, France, 30 March 1916.

Wounded in action, 4 August 1916; admitted to 13th General Hospital, Boulogne, 6 August 1916 (gun shot wound, right arm: severe). Transferred to England, 7 August 1916, admitted to Welsh Metropolitan War Hospital, Whitchurch, Glamorganshire. Transferred to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, 17 November 1916. Granted furlough, 9 December 1916, to report to Perham Downs. Marched in from furlough,13 December 1916; marched out to 6th Training Bn, Rollestone,15 December 1916. Proceeded overseas to France, 20 March 1917; rejoined 23rd Bn, 26 March 1917.

Promoted Temporary Corporal, 16 July 1917; Corporal, 10 September 1917; Sergeant, 1 October 1917. On leave to England, 21 January 1918; rejoined Bn from leave, 6 February 1918.

Appointed Sergeant, Overseas Training Brigade, Longbridge Deverill, England, 4 March 1918; marched in to Overseas Training Brigade, 7 March 1918. Attended the 19th Rifle Course at the Australian School of Musketry, Tidworth, 4 April-4 May 1918, and qualified as 1st Class, with fair working knowledge of Lewis Gun.

Proceeded overseas to France, 4 October 1918.

Marched out for return to Australia, 28 December 1918; commenced return to Australia on board 'Trasos Montes', 8 April 1919; disembarked Melbourne, 22 May 1919; discharged, 22 July 1919.
