'On 24th April, 1918, at BONNAY near ALBERT during a very heavy shelling of the town by gas and H.E. he, on a number of occasions, organised and led stretcher squads through the village and amongst ruined houses under very heavy fire and brought in wounded to the Advanced Dressing Station. When all men were ordered out of the village he remained until he saw all his men clear. He showed the greatest bravery and devotion to duty throughout and set an excellent example to his men.'
