'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in a raid on the enemy's trenches. Though held up for some time by superior numbers of the enemy, he led his men with such determination and aggressiveness that the enemy was eventually driven back with loss. He led his men to the objectives, setting them an inspiring example throughout.'
