'He displayed marked courage throughout, in handling his LMG section under heavy fire and machine gun fire. At HERMIES on 9th April 1917 during our attack on that village this N.C.O. displayed marked courage and skill in handling his Lews Gun Section under heavy rifle and machine gun fire. He set a splendid example of personal courage and devotion to duty to the men under his charge.'
