War service: Egypt, Western Front Tried by Field General Court Martial, 2 July 1917, on charge of when on Active Service an act to the prejudice of good order and military discipline, in that at Havre on 19 June 1917, he was in possession of a document purporting to be a genuine pass knowing that it was not genuine; found guilty; awarded 56 days' Field Punishment No 1. Declared true name to be John Charles Clarence SIMMONDS, 25 June 1917. Tried by Field General Court Martial, 28 October 1917, on charge of when in confinement escaping; found guilty; awarded 90 days' Field Punishment No 2. Tried by Field General Court Martial, 8 June 1918, of charge of escaping his escort; found guilty; awarded 60 days' Field Punishment No 2. Tried by Field General Court Martial, 24 July 1918, on charges of (1) escaping while under arrest; (2) being absent without leave from 9 am, 19 March, until apprehended by Military Police at 8.40 pm, 21 March 1918; (3) offering violence to an escort, 21 March 1918; (4) conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline; found not guilty of charge 1, guilty of charges 2,3,4: awarded 2 years' imprisonment with hard labour. Admitted to No 7 Military Prison, 24 July 1918; sentence remitted as from 8 April 1919. Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Orita', 23 June 1919; disembarked Melbourne, 6 August 1919; discharged (termination of period of enlistment), Adelaide, 21 September 1919.
