Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He was a platoon Sergeant of a platoon constructing a fire trench at the junction of two roads north of BUIRE on night of 16th April, 1918. By his cool and fearless behaviour he kept his men well in hand through heavy shell fire leading them on to the job, and on the work itself, where the shell fire was very heavy, he inspired the men with his exemplary cheerfulness and gallant conduct. Regardless of danger he assisted in moving wounded out of the danger zone and by his example during the most trying hours of the evening kept the men steadily at work until their task was completed.'
