Military Cross 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of a party on tunnel construction. When the hostile attack developed, he promptly disposed of his men to the best advantage, and it was mainly through his valuable assistance that a portion of the line was held intact. Throughout the atack he displayed the greatest courage and coolness under intense enfilading rifle and machine gun fire, moving about, regardless of danger, and encouraging and directing the fire of his men.'
