Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in charge of two Stokes mortars during an attack. He fought his guns most effectively during the advance and during a counter attack by the enemy. In order to knock out an enemy machine gun, he dismantled his mortar, dashed forward to a shell hole, and held the barrel in his bare hands while his comrade dropped the shells down the muzzle. He did fine work.'
