Embarked from Sydney, 1 May 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, 9 July 1916. Proceeded overseas to France, 21 November 1916. Detached to Rail Construction Department, West Capell, 9 February 1917; rejoined unit, 7 April 1917.

Admitted to 12th Australian Field Ambulance, 12 June 1917 (exhaustion); returned to duty, 19 June 1917; rejoined unit, 21 June 1917. Admitted to 11th Australian Field Ambulance, 16 July 1917 (debility); transferred to 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station, 21 July 1917; to England, 26 July 1917, and admitted to Hampstead Military Hospital, 27 July 1917; transferred to 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 9 August 1917. Granted furlough, 15-29 August 1917, to report to No. 2 Command Depot. Proceeded overseas to France, 15 November 1917; rejoined unit, 22 November 1917.

Admitted to 11th Field Ambulance, 1 March 1918; transferred to 1st Casualty Clearing Station, 11 March 1918; to 56th General Hospital, 16 March 1918 (debility); to 6th Convalescent Depot, 23 March 1918; rejoined unit, 25 May 1918. Admitted to 10th Australian Field Ambulance, 21 June 1918 (pyrexia); rejoined unit, 24 June 1918.

Found guilty of being absent without leave from a working party at 10.30 pm, 23 July 1918: awarded 14 days' Field Punishment No. 2.

Declared an illegal absentee as from 19 August 1918 by a Court of Enquiry held in the field, 14 September 1918.

Found guilty by Field General Court Martial, 16 January 1919, of being absent without leave from 1700, 19 August, to 1000, 16 October 1918: awarded 2 years' imprisonment with hard labour. Marched in to No. 1 Military Prison, France, 25 April 1919; transferred to Carmathen Prison, United Kingdom, 27 May 1919; sentence suspended on release from prison, 18 June 1919.

Commenced return to Australia on board 'Prinz Hubertus', 3 July 1919; disembarked Sydney, 26 August 1919; discharged, 11 October 1919.
