Tried by Field General Court Martial, 20 August 1918, on charges (1) Deserting His Majesty's Service from 7.30 pm 31 July 1918 until surrendering at 8.30 pm 7 August 1918; (2) Escaping while under arrest. Found Guilty on both charges. Sentenced to 5 years' penal servitude.

Sentence commuted to 2 years' imprisonment with hard labour, 5 November 1918.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Suevic', 23 July 1919; discharged (termination of period of enlistment), Brisbane, 8 October 1919.
