'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When a direct hit fired the ammunition in a gun pit and set the camouflage on fire the personnel were withdrawn, but he remained until he had extinguished the fire. He was blown about 10 yards by the explosion of a shell, but when another camouflage caught fire he returned and extinguished it.'
