Military Medal 'During the attack on MONT ST. QUENTIN, near PERONNE, on 31st August 1918, this N.C.O. was in charge of a platoon which he led against an enemy machine gun post, one gunner being killed and the remaining 8 being taken prisoner. During the advance he became detached from his company, but, collecting a few men, with a lewis gunner, and acting on his own initiative, he organised a post, on the right of the 19th Battalion, his party killing 5 of the enemy and driving out 10 others, thereby throwing an impending enemy counter attack into confusion. His party had no bombs and were short of S.A.A., and he only kept the position by his tenacity and determination. Later, when the post further to the right was in danger of being rushed and outflanked, he obtained some men from supports, and led them up at a critical moment, driving the enemy back with loss. This N.C.O. acted on his own initiative throughout, and set a splendid example to his men.'
