'During the operations near ZONNEBEKE east of YPRES 4/8th October, 1917, this man did most valuable work as runner. He worked continually under the heaviest of enemy barrages and showed the greatest courage and persistence though worn out through want of sleep. He volunteered for very dangerous work and showed great willingness in the performance of all tasks.'
