'For conspicuous gallantry in action at WESTHOEK. Whilst his Company was laying a buried cable system to the front line during the attack on the morning of the 20th instant he handled his section with great dash and initiative and although suffering heavy casualties by his sheer disregard for danger kept his men employed on this most important task.'
