Embarked from Sydney on board HT 'Beltana', 13 May 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 9 July 1916. Proceeded overseas to France, 22 September 1916, and marched in to No 5 Australian Divisional Base Depot, Etaples, 25 September 1916; taken on strength, 54th Bn, 6 October 1916.

Wounded in action and admitted to 5th Divisional Rest Station (gun shot wound, leg), 15 May 1917; discharged to duty, 17 May 1917; rejoined unit 1 June 1917.

Detached for duty to 5th Division Australian Army Ordnance Corps, 5 October 1917. Proceeded on leave to England, 16 January 1918; rejoined 5th Division Australian Army Ordnance Corps, 24 January 1918. Ceased to be attached 5th Australian Army Ordnance Corps and rejoined unit, 13 May 1918.

Wounded in action, admitted to 14th Field Ambulance and transferred to 5th Casualty Clearing Station, 19 May 1918 (gun shot wound, left arm, severe, fractured radius and ulna); admitted to 2nd Canadian General Hospital, 23 May 1918; to England, 27 May 1918, and admitted to King George's Hospital, London, 28 May 1918; transferred to County Tyrone Auxiliary Hospital, Omagh, Ireland, 23 July 1918; transferred to No 3 Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, England, 22 August 1918. Discharged to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 3 September 1918.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Borda', 20 October 1918 (invalid); arrived Sydney, 19 December 1918; discharged 13 April 1919.
