Military Medal 'For great gallantry and devotion to duty. In the neighbourhood of PERONNE, during period August 30th, 31st, September 1st, 2nd 3rd, 4th and 5th., this N.C.O. rendered the greatest assistance to his Officer, in the successful completion of a footbridge through the SOMME Valley. He was situated on the footbridge head, and was pushing out this bridge at a distance of 300 to 400 yards ahead of our advanced Infantry Posts, and was constantly under direct machine gun fire. he set a fine example to the men, and it was largely due to his courage that the track was completed. On September 5th, he pushed forward with the advanced infantry on reconnaissance and locating road Mines, and despite casualties to his party, removed them under heavy shell fire.'
