Military Medal 'In the operations north west of POZIERES from 29th to 31st August, 1916, this man maintained communication as a runner, between Company and Battalion Headquarters. He was undeterred by the heaviest shelling, by snipers, or by the trying weather conditions. He twice volunteered to carry ammunition and water to the firing line under heavy shelling.' Second description reads: 'During the tour in trenches north of GUEUDECOURT from 27th November, to 6th December, 1916, this man was at all hours of the day and night from the front line to Battalion Headquarters, a distance of about a mile. Although he generally had to go through a very heavy barrage he never failed to speedily deliver his message and take back a replay. He accompanied his Company Commander on dangerous patrols and was always ready and willing to take any risk to gain information. On night of 29th/30th November, 1916, although he had no sleep for 48 hours he cheerfully volunteered to remain all night in the open with a wounded man, although under fire of H.E. and shrapnel all the time, eventually he brought the man to the dressing station. ROLLINGS unfailing cheerfulness and splendid example never failed to greatly encourage his comrades.'
