'On the 8th August, 1918, during the operations on the SOMME, east of HAMEL, Private ROSE displayed great daring throughout the whole of the advance, and by his bravery and resourcefulness was instrumental in capturing several prisoners. When the objective was reached he rendered valuable service as a Company runner, having on several occasions to pass through heavy enemy machine gun fire. By his bravery and high standard of devotion to duty he set a very fine example to his comrades.'
