'On 21st October, 1917 at WESTHOEK east of YPRES the enemy heavily bombarded the position of man's Battery. In the course of the bombardment several dugouts were blown in and men completely buried. Despite the shelling and with an utter disregard of personal safety he helped in great degree to dig out the men and get them to places of safety. He set a fine example of gallantry and devotion to duty under trying conditions.'
