Distinguished Conduct Medal (altered to Military Medal)

'During the operations at MESSINES on the 7th June 1917, while with the Engineer reconnoitering party, this N.C.O., although himself wounded, carried a wounded Sapper under rifle fire into safety. He immediately returned and carried on with the work of constructing a Strong point and later carried messages back to Brigade Hqrs. From there he guided a working party back to the forward area, thus making four journeys of one mile, each through intense artillery fire. He set a fine example of pluck and endurance.'
