Distinguished Conduct Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry in action. He stood upon the enemy's parapet and threw bombs with such effect that the enemy had to cease firing and withdraw. He did other fine work, holding back the enemy, and continued to throw bombs till his arm was so swollen that he could no longer use it.'
