Military Medal 'At EAUCOURT L'ABBAYE, FRANCE on 16th February, 1917 the front line trenches of 12th Bn. were heavily bombarded by French Mortar shells (pineapples). Sgt. Russell displayed conspicuous gallantry under fire, continually moving along the line carrying orders from Coy. HQ. and enforcing posts where the men wished to retire to the support line to move out into No Man's Land. When the line was reorganised he took charge of a Lewis Machine Gun, of which 5 of the team of 6 were casualties.'
