Military Medal 'This man showed great gallantry and devotion to duty during the recent operations on 9th, 10th and 11th June. On the 9th June his squad of stretcher-bearers worked continuously for eighteen (18) hours over an area which included part of the crest and forward slope of MESSINES RIDGE and which, throughout, was subjected to concentrated shell fire of all descriptions. He had not only to evacuate wounded from Regimental Aid Posts, but also carried out a systematic search of shell holes in the vicinity, thus picking up many wounded men who would otherwise have lain out exposed to fire for an indefinite period. Private Ryan throughout, in the interests of the wounded, showed an entire disregard of personal anger. he was previously been recommended.'
