'Private RYAN acted as a Stretcher bearer throughout the whole of the summer and autumn offensive, and in every action he was conspicuous for his gallantry and devotion to duty. Considerations of personal danger never once deterred him from his immediate performance of his duty to the wounded. He has undoubtedly been the means of saving lives and alleviating suffering, and he has always been an inspiring example to other stretcher bearers and his comrades generally.'
