'This man was continuously on duty from 8 p.m. on 3th October, 1917, for 50 hours. On 4th October, 1917, near ZONNEBEKE he lead a party out through deep mud, thigh deep, and brought in three wounded men. By his gallantry he undoubtedly saved these men's lives and by his cheerfulness under adverse conditions kept his squad working and setting an example to all.'
