'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty, when, as forward observation officer and liaison ofice, he transmitted, under heavy shell fire, the intention of the infantry to capture some enemy posts, and thus enabled his brigade of artillery to efficiently support the infantry. All objectives and some prisoners were taken. Also, he repaired the telephone line under heavy shell fire, maintained communication with his brigade, and afforded the infantry an opportunity to report progress over his wire, all other means of communication at the time being dislocated. Later, on the same day, he rendered valuable service as forward observation officer, engaging several targets with his battery most effectively.'
