'Recommended for courage and devotion to duty during attack on HINDENBURG LINE South of REINCOURT on 11th April 1917. After our troops retired to our original line this Non Commissioned Officer organised and led a band of Stretcher Bearers up to enemies wire to recover our wounded. he took the risk of enemy firing on him as Stretcher Bearers had received no respect from enemy Machine Guns and Snipers previous to this. Enemy allowed him to collect wounded and No Machine guns opened fire but snipers and shells were causing casualties all the time. he was successful in getting in all the wounded south of enemy wire and even when enemy warned him at the approach of night that they would allow nor more wounded to be collected he continued to lead out parties and assisted himself in carrying until all our wounded were collected.'
