Distinguished Conduct Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He commanded his section which he only joined as they were lying waiting for the signal of zero hour, with great success, capturing an enemy machine gun post after a determined resistance. His platoon commander and sergeant were wounded, and he took command and drove back a party of the enemy who were endeavouring to develop a flank attack. He displayed qualities of leadership and initiative of a very high order, and set a splendid example of courage under fire.'
