Military Medal 'At ARMENTIERES on the night 26th/27th February, 1917, on the occasion of a raid on the enemy trenches by a composite Battalion of his Brigade, Private SHUTTLEWOOD was a member of a Lewis gun team, which was protecting the right flank of the attack. When all the rest of his team were either killed or wounded by shell fire he stuck to his gun, and successfully dispersed an advance of the enemy on the flank protected by him, handling his gun splendidly. He afterwards covered the retirement of our troops from the enemy trenches until they had reached our own trenches - bringing back with him his gun which was riddled by shrapnel. (Strength of raiding party - 21 Officers, 804 other ranks)'
