Taken on strength, 39th Bn, France, 25 March 1917. Wounded in action (gun shot wound, right arm), 29 May 1917; transferred to England, 2 June 1917; admitted to Brook War Hospital, Woolwich, 3 June 1917. Proceeded overseas to France, 17 September 1917; rejoined unit, 1 October 1917.

Wounded in action (gun shot wound, left leg), 4 October 1917, and admitted to 4th Australian Field Ambulance. Transferred to England, 22 October 1917; admitted to Grazlingwell War Hospital, Chichester, 6 November 1917. Granted furlough, 4-18 January 1918, to report to No. 2 Command Depot, Weymouth.

Commenced return to Australia on board 'Borda', 5 April 1918; disembarked Sydney, 1 June 1918; discharged, 30 November 1918.
