Military Cross 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During an advance, finding that there were no troops on his left, he showed great skill in forming a defensive flank, thus securing his own position and also that of the brigade. He afterwards brought his flank forward and established his company of the original objective. He displayed the greatest gallantry and coolness under severe artillery fire, setting a very fine example to his men. He has on other occasions rendered valuable service by patrolling 'No Man's Land' and gaining information.'
