'On 2nd September 1918, at Halle, near Peronne, he had charge of the cable waggon detachment laying lines from the west side of the river to the brigade forward station. Great difficulty was experienced owing to heavy shell fire. His courage, energy, and skill in this dangerous task, and the splendid example he set his men, were responsible for the lines being ready at zero hour. They were frequently destroyed by shelling, but, as they were actively patrolled by him at the most dangerous places, good communications were kept throughout the whole operations.'
