Meritorious Service Medal

'During the period 16th September to 31st December 1918 this Non Commissioned Officer who is a Battalion Pioneer has rendered cheerful and conspicuous service. /When his Battalion has been engaged in active operations, Corporal SMART has in addition to his other duties often assisted the Battalion Stretcher Bearers to collect and care for the wounded, and in several cases it was due to his initiative, coolness and timely assistance in the above work that the lives of his comrades were saved. His work has always been most efficiently carried out and his conduct an example to all.'
