Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during operations East of VILLE-sur-ANCRE, South West of ALBERT, on night of 3rd/4th July 1918. On Private SMEE's section commander becoming a casualty, he took charge of the section, rallied them under heavy machine gun fire, and rushed a post, killing the garrison and capturing the gun. On reaching the objective he dug his section in and then reported to the nearest N.C.O. The assumption of command by this Private undoubtedly was the means of overcoming the enemy post, thus enabling our troops to get forward.'
