War service: Western Front Embarked Melbourne, 20 October 1915; disembarked Plymouth, England, 9 January 1917. Proceeded overseas to France, 28 March 1917; marched in to 2nd Australian Division Base Depot, Etaples, France, 29 March 1917; marched out to unit, 31 March 1917; taken on strength of 2nd Pioneer Bn, 1 April 1917. Wounded in action, admitted to 3rd Casualty Clearing Station and transferred to Ambulance Train, 3 May 1917 (shrapnel wound to face); admitted to 32nd Stationary Hospital, Wimereux, 4 May 1917; transferred to No 1 Convalescent Depot, 6 May 1917; to 3rd Rest Camp, Boulogne, 13 May 1917; discharged and marched in to 2nd Australian Division Base Depot, Havre, 18 June 1917. Marched out to unit, 5 August 1917; rejoined unit in the field, 8 August 1917; granted leave to United Kingdom, 28 February to 15 March 1918; failed to report in, 15 March 1918. Court of Enquiry held in the field, 16 May 1918, declared that the Private illegally absented himself without leave on 15 March 1918 and that he remained absent.
