War service: Egypt, Gallipoli, Western Front Embarked Alexandria to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, Gallipoli, 30 August 1915. Promoted Lance Corporal, Gallipoli, 5 October 1915. Disembarked Alexandria from Mudros, 10 January 1916 (general Gallipoli evacuation). Promoted Corporal,2 January 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 19 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 30 March 1916.. Promoted Sergeant, 29 July 1916. Admitted to 2nd Australian Field Ambulance, 30 July 1916; transferred same day to 1st Anzac Rest Station (cold and insomnia); discharged to duty and rejoined Bn, in the field, 4 August 1916. Awarded Military Medal for services rendered during recent fighting at Pozieres, 2 September 1916. Appointed Temporary Company Sergeant Major and Warrant Officer Class II, 31 March 1917. Appointed 2nd Lieutenant, 26 April 1917.
