Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry on 7th November, 1917. Near BROODSEINDE RIDGE whilst guiding a party of 34 men of his Company into the line under heavy shell fire he was wounded in the leg more than a mile away from his destination; but in spite of his wound, he guided the party in and handed over. After handing over, refusing assistance he made his way out with great difficulty to the Dressing Station. Besides being an excellent Machine Gunner, Private SMITH has on many occasions acted as guide, and his coolness and calm judgment have done much to bring his parties through unscathed.'
