Military Medal 'At ARMENTIERES on the night 9th/10th January, 1917, this Lewis gunner covered a raid made on the enemy trenches. After the raid, while the party were returning to our trenches, he engaged a hostile machine gun with coolness and deliberation, retiring slowly, and opening fire every four or five yards. He and the Officer commanding the assault did not return to our trenches until all the party were safely home.'
