'He has shown continuous devotion to duty and gallantry in action as a Hotchkiss gunner. At Amman, on 27 March, 1918, he covered the retirement of his squadron. On 28 March, 1918, at Amman, he took charge of two Hotchkiss rifles, and assisted in covering the withdrawal of the 7th Australian Light Horse Regiment. It was largely due to his determination and accurate fire that the Turks were prevented from pressing forward and capturing our wounded.'
