Disembarked Alexandria, 27 February 1916. Taken on strength, 13th Bn, Tel el Kebir, 6 March 1916.

Promoted Temporary 2nd Corporal, 18 May 1916.

Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 6 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 13 June 1916.

Promoted Temporary Sergeant, 13 August 1916; Sergeant, 15 November 1916.

Wounded in action, 27 November 1916 (gun shot wound, right leg); admitted to 2nd General Hospital, Havre, 30 November 1916; transferred to England, 3 December 1916, and admitted same day to 5th Southern General Hospital, Portsmouth; discharged on furlough, 2 March 1917, to report to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 17 March 1917. Reported absent without leave, 26 March 1917; then reported sick in 5th Southern General Hospital, 2 June 1917; transferred to 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 18 May 1917; discharged to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 29 May 1917.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Nestor', 22 July 1917; disembarked, 27 September 1917, for overland travel to Brisbane; discharged, Brisbane (medically unfit: debility), 16 November 1917.
