Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 6 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 13 June 1916. Promoted Temporary Sergeant, 13 August 1916; Sergeant, 15 November 1916. Wounded in action, 27 November 1916 (gun shot wound, right leg); admitted to 2nd General Hospital, Havre, 30 November 1916; transferred to England, 3 December 1916, and admitted same day to 5th Southern General Hospital, Portsmouth; discharged on furlough, 2 March 1917, to report to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 17 March 1917.
