Note on Form B103: 'Identity Disc received from Germany. No particulars were afforded except that Soldier was deceased. May now be reported "KILLED IN ACTION" 20/7/16.'

German report, 2 August 1916: 'austr. Sold. Spence, M. vom 30. Battn ... Nr. 4616. (sic) am 19.7 in Gegend Fromelles gefallen.'

Statement, 4428 Pte T.A. ALLINSON, C Company, 30th Bn, 19 January 1917: 'The last seen of him was in the German front line, after he had assisted a badly wounded comrade over to our lines.'

Second statement, 2379 Pte B.J. LAMERTON, 30th Bn (patient St John's Hospital, Etaples), 12 December 1916: 'He was struck by shell on Nomans (sic) Land. Pte. May, 30, C, IX, knows all about it. He told me.'
