'During the night attack on the night 28/29th July 1918 astride BRAY-CORBIE Road, Private STANDLEY exhibited extraordinary bravery and courage. When near the first objective a machine gun opened fire 30 yards away. Immediately Private STANDLEY called on his bombing team. He himself rushed straight at the gun while his bombing team separated and closed in on either side. In less than half a minute the gun crew had all been killed and the machine gun captured, without a casualty being sustained by the bombing team. Private STANDLEY displayed courage of a very high order in dashing straight at the gun himself while his team surrounded it and no praise can be too high regarding his action under very trying circumstances.'
