'For consistent good work in the firing line at POZIERES from the night of 5th August, 1916, until the morning of 8th August, 1916. During most of that time the trenches were subjected to a very heavy bombardment. Sergeant STEPHENS was acting as Platoon Commander and his courage and fearlessness was instrumental in helping to keep the garrison of the trench in good spirits and also greatly assisted his Company Commander.'
