'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. on the 5th April 1918 during the attack on our Line opposite DERNANCOURT, this Gunner displayed great courage and determination in maintaining telephonic communication between Group headquarters and his Battery throughout the day. He was constantly under heavy shell fire during the day, but continued to repair the lines which were cut very frequently, and kept his Battery in communication with Group headquarters during critical operations.'
