Embarked from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 5 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 12 June 1916. Promoted Sergeant, 16 September 1916.

Detached for duty at 1st Anzac Corps School of Instruction, France, 13 May 1917; rejoined unit, 16 June 1917, and congratulated by the Divisional Commander on having obtained very satisfactory reports at the School. Promoted Company Sergeant Major (Warrant Officer Class II), 22 September 1917.

Wounded in action, 21 October 1917, and treated at 3rd Australian Field Ambulance for shell wound to the right leg. Admitted to 2nd Stationary Hospital, Abbeville, 22 October; transferred to England on board 'Carisbrook Castle' with gun shot wounds and fractures to the legs. Transferred to 1st Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 27 May 1918. Commenced return to Australia on board A14 on 30 June 1918. Disembarked Australia, 1 September 1918; discharged, medically unfit, 6 April 1919. Total service: 3 years 234 days (of which 2 years 310 days were abroad). Medals: 1914/15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal
