Embarked Alexandria to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, Gallipoli, 7 October 1915; joined 25th Bn at Gallipoli, 12 October 1915. Appointed Temporary Corporal, 29 November 1915. Disembarked Alexandria, 6 January 1916 (general Gallipoli evacuation). Promoted Corporal, 29 February 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 15 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 22 March 1916. Admitted to 2nd Division Rest Station, 3 May 1916 (bronchitis); discharged to duty, 9 May 1916. Wounded in action, 5 August 1916 (gun shot wound, left ankle), and admitted to 7th Field Ambulance; transferred to Line of Communication Hospital, 6 August 1916; to England, 12 August 1916, and admitted to 2nd Western General Hospital, Manchester, 13 August 1916; transferred to No 2 Auxiliary Hospital, Southall, 27 November 1916 (amputated left leg).
