'During the operations east of YPRES on 20th September, 1917, Cpl. SULLIVAN was engaged on the construction of a strong point. Together with his section officer he went ahead with the infantry to reconnoitre the position. As senior N.C.O. of his section he set an example of courage and devotion to duty which greatly impressed his men. He was ultimately badly wounded but insisted on returning to the Dressing Station alone so as not to take valuable men from their work.'
