'Is recommended for great gallantry and dash in action near HAMEL WOOD, east of CORBIE, on 4th July, 1918. Before the operation actually commenced this man did great work in laying the tapes, and establishing a jumping off position. He also obtained very useful information while on patrol. As soon as the attack commenced, he was in charge of the screen in front of the first wave of his Company, and in this capacity he displayed great initiative and determination. As soon as the barrage lifted he rushed an enemy listening post which he had located earlier in the night, and with the assistance of two other men succeeded in killing the occupants although he was seriously wounded before reaching the post. His cheerfulness and coolness was a fine example to all around him.'
